都市近郊の農村集落では,地域の伝統的農村住宅形式が継承されている一方で、市街化がすすむ過程で伝統的農村住宅形式とは全くデザインを異にする郊外戸建て住宅の形式や、ツーバイフォーやRC造などによる様々な外観デザインの住宅が混入することにより、農村集落の景観が姿を変えつつある。本研究では、特に多様な外観デザインを持つ、いわゆるプレハブ住宅に着目し、この住宅形式が農村集落にどう侵入しつつあるのか、それによって集落景観がどう変容しつつあるのかを明らかにした。平成10年度は、大都市近郊農村集落として関西国際空港の建設過程で急速に都市化がすすんだ大阪府の泉州地域の農村集落を、また平成11年度は地方都市の農村集落として、福井県福井市近郊の農村集落を対象にして、集落の農村性の程度によって集落を構成する住宅の姿がどのように異なるかを、プレハブ住宅の分布状況を中心に検討した。その結果、まず、農村率が低下し集落の農村性が低くなるに従って、地域の伝統的な住宅外観形式が減少し、プレハブ住宅の侵入率が高くなること、その傾向は大都市近郊農村集落である泉州地域の農村集落の方が強いことが明らかになった。また、プレハブ住宅は農家の母屋よりも農家の若い世代が住むハナレに見られる場合が多かったが、福井市周辺の農村集落では、地域の伝統的な外観形式を継承した母屋と棟続きでプレハブ造のハナレが作られている事例もみられ、2つの相異なる住宅外観形式が複合することによって、農村集落に新たな外観デザインの住宅を形成していることを明らかにした。
