本研究では、前近代の日本における人間の活動空間に関して、今日の緑地学的視点によって体系化を試みる研究の一部である。2カ年の研究期間のうち、今回は前半1カ年の途中経過を報告する。造園学では従来、近代以前についての歴史的研究は私的空間である庭園に関するものを主たるものとしてきたが、今日の緑地空間分類に表現される概念に照らし合わせると、並木や公に開放された園地、広場など、造園学が総合的に対象とすべき空間は庭園以外にも多く存在している。これらを研究し、「緑地史」学を体系化することは、日本における「緑地」に対する思想や整備手法の成立・発展過程を考察する上で重要なものであり、本研究では、このうち、並木の文化史・制度史に関する事項を中心に検討をおこなっている。従来、並木の歴史的研究は、交通史、林政史などの研究分野において、研究の主体としてではなく、捕足的な位置づけで研究がなされることが多く、たとえば、他の緑地空間との関連においてはあまり研究されてきていない。本研究では、上に示した上位の研究課題との関連から、調査分析対象としての並木を「同一種あるいは類似種の樹木を人間が列状の植栽することによって構成される緑地空間」と位置づけ、狭義には、道路・水路など線型のインフラストラクチュアと併存するもの、広義には、敷地を囲う列状の樹木植栽なども扱うものとした。今年度の研究計画のうち、既往の調査・研究のレヴュおよび「前近年に起源を持つ日本の並木に関する歴史地理学的データーベース」は、現在作業進行中であり、収集した資料から得られるデータを整理する枠組について検討した。また、同種の植物を連続して植栽したり、郡食したりすることの意味については、萌芽更新によってその姿を長く伝えられてきたと考えられる玉川上水の桜並木を事例に検討し、特に、桜の解毒作用等について生物学等の研究をレヴュをおこなってきた。
