本研究の目的は、同姓組織を事例として在日コリアンのエスニック・コミュニティの形成過程とその現状を、グローバリゼーションの一側面であるヒトの移動に伴う移住者のネットワークという視点に立て実証的に記述し、それを通じて、都市におけるエスニック・コミュニティの一形態についての考察を加えることである。平成12年度の研究調査の実施を通じて、在日コリアンの同姓組織は、一方では親密な個人のネットワーク(桂城君派宗親会、関西分院)、他方では人脈のネットワーク化(日本国支院)という意味を有し、社会的場面によって使い分けていることがわかった。こうした結果を踏まえて、平成13年度の研究調査では、特に在日コリアンの同姓組織に対するニューカマーズの関わりに焦点をおいて、韓国と日本の同姓組織の役員とニューカマーズを対象とするヒアリングを行った。その結果、本研究の事例では、在日コリアンの同姓組織(日本国支院)へのニューカマーズの参加はほとんどみられなかった。ただし、関西分院には、韓国から派遣された金剛学校の校長が参加していた。つまり、在日コリアンの同姓組織には、韓国で一定の社会的地位にある同姓のみが参加するということがわかった。韓国系ニューカマーズの多くは出稼ぎ労働者や留学生からなっており、主にキリスト教会を中心とする相互扶助のネットワークを形成している。韓国系ニューカマーズにとって、日本での生活経験が異なる在日コリアンが集まる同姓組織よりは、同じニューカマーズどうしが集まる教会を中心とするネットワークの方が、精神面でも生活面でも有益なものになっている。いまのところ、日本の都市において、同姓組織を軸とする在日コリアンと韓国系ニューカマーズとの相互関係は少なく、それぞれ独自のエスニック・コミュニティを形成しているといえる。今後、日本と韓国の経済的・社会的交流がより多くなっているという新しい状況のなかで、韓国系ニューカマーズとの関わりで、在日コリアンの同姓組織にどのような変化が生じているのかを見定めていくことが求められる。
