日本人にとっては蛇口をひねれば当たり前に出てくる水、そんな水道技術が水ビジネスとして海外に輸出されている事実に驚いた子どもは、日本の水道技術や水ビジネスの現状について調べ始めた。そして、高水準の水処理技術がありながらも、日本の水事業に関しては官公庁と民間企業の役割が長年分断されてきたために官民一体化が大幅に遅れていることを見つけた。また、海外の企業と比べ、技術の売り上げで大きく差を広げられているという水ビジネスを取り巻く問題を捉えた。そして、子どもは官公庁や企業、水道局の水ビジネスへの取り組みを知りたいと考え、取材に動き出した。今、水ビジネスに官民一体化の流れがあり、官民企業やファンドが誕生しているなど官と民の関係性が変化していることを明らかにした子どもは、それらを意見交流の中で関わらせることで、水ビジネスを多面的・多角的に捉えた。そして、新たなビジネスのあり方を見いだしたいと考え、水ビジネスを通して見える将来の日本のビジネスのあり方や現代社会の仕組みを一人一人が思い描き始めた。そして、途上国に関する日本の関わりとして、お金儲けのみを追求するのではなく、現地の人々の声にも耳を傾け、ビジネスと支援を切り離さず結びつけて考えるべきという新たなビジネスのあり方や現代社会の仕組みを実感した。その中で、グローバルウォータ・ジャパン代表の吉村和就氏をお招きし、意見交流をすることで、自分たちの追究の成果を発信するとともに、水ビジネスの未来について語り合った。本研究により、子どもは、これから自分たちが担うことになる日本や世界の姿を見通し、自分にできることや自分と社会とのつながりを考え始めることができた(社会参画)。
