乙姫劇団は太平洋戦争終了後の沖縄で、1949年に発足した女性団員のみによって構成された沖縄芝居の劇団である。劇団には興業日誌が存在し、本土復帰前の18年間については日々の興業について克明な記録が残っている。近年は沖縄映画史などの観点から沖縄本島地域を中心に、沖縄芝居などが上演された劇場(映画館)所在地の比定が進んでおり、今後さらなる戦後沖縄芸術文化史の解明が期待できる。しかし沖縄本島以外での場所で行われた沖縄芝居の公演活動については、現在ほとんど調査が手つかずの状況にある。乙姫劇団が1968年12月-1969年1月に鹿児島県沖永良部島で行った公演については、先行研究では全くといってよいほど言及されていない。興業日誌にも公演そのものの記載はなく、上演劇場についても団員らの記憶があいまいで、『和泊町史』『知名町史』にもこれらの出来事については全く記載が無かった。研究者は今回、鹿児島大学附属図書館や鹿児島県立奄美図書館、沖永良部島にある二町の教育委員会などと連絡を取った上、新聞などの一次資料ならびに郷土史書などを調査すると同時に現地にてフィールドワークを行った。1)『大島新聞』『南海日々新聞』『南日本新聞』を閲覧したが、該当期間内に沖永良部島における芸術文化活動はほとんど記載がなかった。2) 沖永良部島では劇場史の研究はこれまで全くといって良いほど進んでおらず、今回のフィールドワークを通して初めて複数の劇場所在地が明らかになった。拙論「近現代の沖永良部島における劇場/映画館の変遷-終戦直後記から昭和三〇年代を中心に-」 (『沖縄芸術の科学』第29号)に詳細を記した。今後は乙姫劇団の元団員等にインタビューして当時の上演状況を解明したい。また、同じ奄美群島内の周辺離島(喜界島、徳之島、与論島)などでも劇場/映画館についてフィールドワークを行い、戦後奄美芸術文化史の研究にいくらか寄与できればと考えている。
