古墳から出土した金属製象嵌遺物は、多くの場合、表面が錆こぶで覆われているために象嵌文様の全体像を目視できない。考古学の調査、博物館施設での展示に供するため、表面の錆こぶを削り落とす、象嵌の表出という作業を経て文様があらわになる。この一連の作業を保存修復という。研究対象とした福島県下の古墳から出土した象嵌鍔の象嵌を表出する作業において、象嵌線を覆う錆こぶをグラインダーで研削すると錆が粉末となるが、多くはないが、錆こぶが塊のまま剥がれ落ちることがあった。この場合、象嵌線表面に一定方向の筋を認めたため、この筋を製作当時の技法であると考え、象嵌線表面を拡大撮影して観察した。観察結果を総合すると、少なくとも象嵌線表面の筋が二方向に向いていることが分かった。象嵌線の表面には、筋の他に微細な凹みのようなものを観察した。この凹みは不規則に点在していたため、意図を持って人工的に加工した痕跡というよりも、古墳の中の埋蔵環境下で進行した腐食によるものではないかと考えている。宮城県下からの古墳から出土した象嵌鍔を比較対象とした。比較対象の製品は象嵌の表出を終えていたため、象嵌線の表面を観察したが、一定方向の筋の様な痕跡を認められなかった。むしろ、象嵌線の表面が腐食して鍔の地金に溶け込んでいるような状態(拡散)であり、象嵌線の輪郭が不鮮明な状態であると考察した。古墳から出土した象嵌製品の製作技法の解明に関して、製品の腐食状態(劣化状態)を的確に診断できてこそ、保存修復の過程で得た観察所見を的確に判断できるものであると考える。
