【研究背景・目的】英語をいかに効果的・効率的に学ぶのかということについての関心が強まっており, 多角的な議論がなされてきた。その中で, 語と語がかたまった形(チャンク)が英語使用の大半を占めていることが指摘されていた。実際, これまでのチャンクに着目した研究においても様々な学習効果があることが報告されていた。しかしながら, 具体的にどのような文法の習得に効果があるのかは十分に検証されていなかった。従って, 本研究の目的は, チャンク型学習法であるOral sentence building(OSB, 口頭並べ替え)を利用し, どのような文法項目(特に構文としての文法)の習得に効果があるのかを明らかにすることであった。【研究方法】国立大学附属中学校3年生142名を対象に研究を行った。まず, 普段の学習から間違いが多いと思われた文法10項目を含んだ整序問題と英訳問題を解いてもらった。その結果から研究対象となる5項目を選出した。事前テストと事後テストではOSB問題, 整序問題, 英訳問題を出題した。その間, 10回の授業の中で当該の5項目を含んだOSB練習問題に取り組んでもらった。【研究成果】上位群と下位群に分け, 事前・事後テストの結果に対してt検定を行った。上位群では特に「SVOC」や「不定詞」「間接疑問文」に, 下位群では特に「it～for～to」や「間接疑問文」「SVOC」に有意な伸びが見られた。また, 共通して動名詞に顕著な伸びが見られたが, これは他の項目の伸びとは異なり, 主語として動名詞を用いるという発想ができるようになったことが要因であると考えられる。概して, チャンクを利用した学習法は, 学習者の習熟度によって異なるものの一定の文法項目の習得に効果があることが明らかになった。
