来校者のために, 駅から学校までの道のりを記した案内標識を作りたいと考えた子どもたち。しかし, ホームページ上に表記された道のりには違いがあり, 自らの力ではっきりさせたいと考えた。子どもたちは, 巻尺で計測したり, 歩幅の長さ×歩数で求めたり, 教師用コンパスで等距離のいくつ分であるかで考えたりと, 様々な方法で生活の中にある教材を通して問題解決に取り組んだ。各自のひとり調べで得た考えを画用紙に記述し, 互いに見合う活動を行うと, 仲間の考えを把握し, 自らの考えとの共通点や相違点が気になり始めてきた。かかわり合いの中で, 多くの子どもは正確であるというよさから既習事項である巻尺を使うことが有効であると当初は考えていたが, 実際に計測するとなると, 巻尺を何度も延ばすという大変さや横断歩道で車を待たせる, 通行人の邪魔になるなど, 効率性や安全性の面で難があることが見えてきた。そこで, 対話や学習記録の朱書きで教師が支えてきた生活経験をよりどころとした考えである歩幅の長さとその歩数で道のりを求めようとしている子どもの考えを取り上げ, 実際にその考えを試してみることにした。子どもたちは, 各自で20歩分の距離を計測し歩数で割ることで, 平均を用いて歩幅の長さを求め, 歩くだけで効率よく道のりを求められるよさを実感した。そして, 平均を用いることで, 巻尺やコンパスと同様に等しい長さのいくつ分であるかで道のりを求めることが可能であると判断する姿が見られた。21世紀型スキルを育むために, 子どもたちが追究を進めていくなかで, わかったことを発表して満足するに留まらず, 仲間との協働的な学び合いを通して, 思考としての理解だけではなく, 実際に試してみることで実感を伴った理解となり, よりよい問いへの答えを導き出すまでに至ることが見えてきた。
