本研究の目的は、大正期以降に巨大化した製糸家の経営形態について、個別製糸工場に焦点を当てて考察を行うことである。研究の対象としたのは、郡是製糸・長井工場である。この時期の製糸工場が高格糸生産を確立するに際しては、多条繰糸機及び優良繭が大きい役割を果たしたとされるが、それがどういう経緯で導入され、生産性や収益性にどういう影響を与えたのか、という点については明確にされてこなかった。そのため本研究ではこの点を分析の中心とした。また本研究は昨年度からの継続として行っている。研究に当たっては、今年度も5回にわたって京都府綾部市の郡是本社に存する経営史料の収集を行い、その分析を行った。昨年度は主として多条繰糸機の導入が生糸生産に与えた影響について分析を行い、収益性を中核に据えた経営分析に重点をおいて研究を進めたが、今年度は原料繭や繰糸技術が生糸生産に与えた影響をより一層重視し、工務の分析を中心として研究を焦点化していった。本研究において考察した内容は以下の通りである。1930年代前半、同工場において高格糸生産に移行した直後は、品質を最優先として生糸生産を行ったが、それに際しては多条繰糸機の導入と共に優良繭の投入が重要な要素であった。そして新たな生産形態導入当初は良好であると言えなかった原料生産性や労働生産性も次第に向上していった。だがそれでも収益性は良くなかった。その後、1930年代後半に至ると、郡是本社からより低格の生糸生産にシフトしていくことが方針として打ち出され、更なる生産性の向上が具体的な目標として提示された。長井工場においても生産する生糸の品質を相対的に低下させつつ、それとともに生産性の向上を実現させている。そのことにより次第に収益性も向上し、工場として最適な生産形態を現出するようになっていった。
