本研究では、1907年に来日し40年にわたり日本において音楽教育を施したDr. ケイト・I・ハンセンが、どのような手法で当時5音階しか知らなかった日本人に対し、7音階をもちいた西洋音楽の指導の礎を築いたかをアメリカ人女性の視点で浮き彫りにすることを目的とした。研究方法としては、宮城学院資料室において既に受けていた米国カンザス大学所蔵の「ハンセン資料」のコピー(マイクロフィルム60巻)、国内未発表のこれらの資料の一部をデジタル化し、本研究を進める環境を整えた。調査の中からハンセン直筆の「修士論文」、「エッセイ」及び楽譜を見出し、これらをタイプにおこした。翻訳等については本学同窓生英文コース会有志、および木村春美准教授の指導を受けた。あわせて、1941年ハンセンに直接指導を受けた、秋田県在住の卒業生(現在94歳)に聞き取り調査し研究を進めた。その成果は「宮城学院資料室年報-信望愛-第23号」に発表した。ハンセンの修士論文から、国内の学校では戦後に初めて導入されたソルフェージュの授業を、すでに明治・大正期に自作テキストを用いて指導していることが分かった。この独自の指導方法だけでなく、当時の社会の中で日本人女性が抱えている音楽のつまずきを解明していることも分かった。最先端の音楽教育を日本人の国民性に合わせて施したハンセンに教えを受けた卒業生たちは、全国の学校へ音楽教師として赴任したことが分かり、日本全体の西洋音楽の普及において重要な役割を果たしたことが明らかになった。更にまた、ハンセンの教育の成果や日本の音楽についてだけでなく、当時の日本に於ける教育差別や、西洋音楽普及の様子など、社会的・歴史的な状況も具体的に明らかになった。
