研究目的:15・16世紀の北海道の領主権力の実態を明らかにすることにある。具体的には、松前藩の祖となる蠣崎氏を対象に、奥羽を中心とした他地域の領主との関係から、その権力の特質の解明を目指す。本研究では、「在地領主が港湾を拠点にして政治的な関係を結ぶとともに、港を結ぶ流通のネットワークの形成・維持に寄与している」と仮説を立て、その実証を目指す。研究方法:一つ目に、東北にある古文書と「新羅之記録」の比較をおこなう。2点目は、中世に港湾だった場所の現地調査を通して、港のネットワークの解明の一助とする。研究成果:本研究の成果は、大きく2点ある。1点目に、東北に現存する16世紀の史料や写本を確認することで、後世(17世紀)に書かれた「新羅之記録」の史料批判をおこなうとともに、16世紀の蠣崎氏のあり方を知る手がかりが得られた。具体的には、「新羅之記録」にある記事が、16世紀の古文書からは裏付けできず、「新羅之記録」の信憑性は決して高くはないことが確認できた。また、16世紀の古文書からは、蠣崎氏が秋田の安東氏や、さらに敵対したと思われていた南部氏とも交流をもっていたことが確認できた。2点目に、青森県の十三湊遺跡や青森港、秋田港などの港湾の現地調査をおこなったことで、15・16世紀の東北の港は、北海道の箱館や松前、上ノ国に劣らない良港であることが確認できた。また、港の近くには寺院跡があり、交易と宗教勢力との関係をうかがうことができた。さらに、秋田県の脇本城跡を訪れ、調査したことで、脇本城が港を管理できる位置にあることに加え、防御性が高く、規模も大きいことがわかり、脇本の城主だった秋田安東氏の実力をうかがい知ることができた。
