火炎土器様式は、縄文時代の中期前葉から中葉にかけて成立・展開した土器様式の一つである。信濃川中・上流域を中心として新潟県のほぼ全域に広がり、隣接する周辺地域にも影響を及ぼした。様式の特色は装飾的な造形をもつ火焔型・王冠型土器に象徴されるが、土器以外にも土偶・三角形土版・土製耳飾等の土製品、石鏃・打製石斧・磨製石斧等の石器類、玉類・石棒等の石製品など、生業や精神文化に関わる多種多様な出土遺物が認められる。様式圏内でも遺物の種類によって様相差の程度が異なり、それらが地域性の指標となるような状況が窺われるのである。火炎土器様式圏内外の地域性や文化の変容過程を具体的に解明してくためには、土器研究を基軸としながら、共存するその他の遺物を含めて多角的な分析を行う必要がある。本研究では、近年の研究情勢を踏まえて、地域間の比較検討を進める上での視点を探った。新潟県内及び隣県の資料調査により、火炎土器様式の広がりは新潟県域を中心とした日本海側にほぼ限られることを確認した。これらの状況から、信濃川中・上流域、長岡周辺～十日町市・津南町にかけての範囲が中核的な第1地域、第1地域を除く新潟県域=上越・下越・佐渡の各地方が第2地域、新潟県に隣接する周辺地方が様式圏外の第3地域に位置づけられる。第2地域では様式A群の組成は一定でなく、隣接する圏外他地域の土器様式の影響を受けた変容が生じており、さらに細分できる。第3地域の日本海側では、様式圏内で製作された土器が飛び石的に搬入されたと考えられる。一方、太平洋側の福島県・栃木県方面には、亜流の「火炎系土器」が広がった。土器様式の地域性については、範型の明瞭なAI(火焔型)・AII(王冠型)型式に対して、それ以外の型式の口縁部形態や文様構成は多様であり、地域性を反映している可能性がある。特に新巻・焼町式土器様式の影響を受けた「曲隆線文系土器」等の識別方法の明確化が鍵になろう。土製品・石製品を再検討した結果、信濃川中・上流の中核的な地域内でも様相差が生じていることが明らかになった。土偶の場合、長岡地域は板状で無脚、中魚沼地域は板状で有脚の形態が主流である。長岡地域の腕部の有孔が懸垂的な機能を示唆するのに対して、魚沼地域では立像形を意識した造作であり、製作技法や用途に関わる重要な差異と考えられる。土製品・石製品には土器様式とは異なる体系や系譜があり、それらの製作技術や伝統を共有する地域の検証が、火炎土器様式圏内における文化的な領域を把握することにつながる。
