本研究解題では、第二次世界大戦によって生じた沖縄関係者の日本本土からの引揚げ・送還に関する研究基盤を整えた。戦後、連合国の占領政策によってかつての沖縄県は、琉球として日本本土から切り離された。同時に日本本土在住の沖縄出身者は琉球へ帰還するか、そのまま日本に在住するか、選択を迫られた。このような状況は、朝鮮や中国、台湾等への引揚げ・送還とほぼ同様であった。琉球への帰還希望沖縄出身者は、浦賀、名古屋、宇品(大竹を含む)、佐世保、鹿児島等の各港から送還された。本研究課題では、最も多くの沖縄出身者を送還した九州地区の長崎、鹿児島に焦点をあて、当時当地発刊の『長崎日報』『長崎日日新聞』、『鹿児島日報』『南日本新聞』、戦後沖縄県事務所所在地福岡の『西日本新聞(福岡版)』、受入側地元沖縄紙『ウルマ新報(後うるま新報)』で伝えられた沖縄関係者引揚げ・送還状況の記事を中心に、朝鮮、中国、台湾等への引揚げ・送還、日本の旧植民地や占領地からの沖縄出身者を含む日本人の日本本土への引揚げ関係記事など、引揚げ・送還全般について、網羅的に採録、目録化を図った(1945年8月～46年12月間)。沖縄出身者引揚げ・送還の先行研究は、個々の事実も含めて必ずしも実証的な裏付けによって記述されていないことが判明した。本研究課題実施による最大の意義は、新聞記事調査実施・目録化、及び引揚関係資料の収集によって、先行研究が少なからず訂正され、確実な歴史的事実を記述できる基盤を整備したことにある。その他、目録化によって沖縄出身者の引揚げ・送還の推移や送出・受入両側の状況を伝える新聞記事が一覧できるようになり、新たな知見を提示できるようになった。また、網羅的な記事採録によって、沖縄出身者引揚げ・送還が戦後日本からの朝鮮や中国等への引揚げ・送還を含む全体のなかに位置づけることも可能とした。
