本研究は、特徴的な胎土をもつ土器に注目し、その広がりと分布を通じ古墳時代初頭の土器生産流通体制を解明することを目的とする。具体的な分析としては、生駒西麓型庄内形甕の分布と、結晶片岩を含む土器として認識可能な紀ノ川流域産の土器の空間的な分布の把握を行った。まず、基礎資料の整理として、紀ノ川下流域の土器資料について資料の図化・公開、胎土分類の統計処理を行い基礎資料とした。その結果、紀ノ川下流域では胎土に含まれる鉱物には一定の傾向があることが判明し、紀ノ川流域でも地域により傾向が異なることが分かった。また、この結果をもとに形態が類似する淡路島の土器との比較を行い、両地域で土器が共通することが判明した。一方で生駒西麓型庄内形甕の分布傾向の検討を行った。生駒西麓型庄内形甕の生産地と考えられる八尾市域から河内平野部にかけては、甕形土器の中で生駒西麓型庄内形甕が80%以上を占めることが分かった。また、河内平野より南では堺市小坂遺跡で10%以下、それより南の熊取町大久保B遺跡では1%と極めて低い割合を示す。紀ノ川下流域の遺跡でも同様の傾向をもうかがうことができ、太田・黒田遺跡で0～1%、田屋遺跡で1%という結果がわかった。この点から生駒西麓型庄内形甕は、河内平野を中心に供給されており、周辺地域には距離に応じて拡散して行くことが読み取れた。しかし、庄内形甕という器種の観点からみると、田屋遺跡、西田井遺跡、鳴神IV遺跡などで在地胎土の庄内形甕が見られることが判明した。在地の庄内形甕の分布は南河内、和泉地域では極少量であり、紀ノ川下流域でも特に限定された遺跡で庄内形甕が生産されることがわかった。同様の現象は大和地域、播磨地域、山城地域でも認められ、庄内形甕の広がりには生駒西麓型庄内形甕の広がりと、一定の距離を超えた地域には庄内形甕の土器製作技法が広がることが判明した。庄内形甕の広がりからは古墳時代初頭の人・モノ・情報の動きは極めて限定的であることが土器の動きから裏付けられたことが本研究の成果である。
