The Collaborative Research Centre TRR 277 Additive Manufacturing in Construction (TRR 277 AMC) of the Technical University of Braunschweig (TUBS) and the Technical University of Munich (TUM) is researching the fundamentals of additive manufacturing for the construction industry across materials and processes. In contrast to industrial series production, in which large numbers of identical components are produced in sequential process steps, additive manufacturing produces the component in a continuous, digitally controlled 3D printing process without prior formwork. This reduces the number of process steps and creates new freedom for the individual and shape-optimised design of components and structures. TRR 277 AMC thus combines the requirements of automation and individualisation in construction. Furthermore, AMC technologies enable a paradigm shift in structural design: shape optimisations and functional integrations are no longer limited by formwork, but can be produced according to technical requirements with a minimum of resources. In construction, additive manufacturing technologies have the potential to unite ecology and economy and to show new ways of how we build in the future. The research of TRR 277 AMC focuses on fundamental investigations of innovative additive manufacturing technologies in different material and process combinations. The basic research is based on a novel integrative research approach in which structural design, material technologies and manufacturing processes are viewed as inseparable, digitally networked units and researched coherently. In addition, the interfaces of the various AMC technologies to the preceding planning environments and subsequent construction sites are investigated. This holistic digitally networked approach offers completely new possibilities for interaction and the exchange of data-based information between planning and construction. It also enables holistic digital workflows to improve quality and shorten construction time. The basic research of the TRR 277 AMC in the 2nd funding period focuses on the in-depth investigations of material-process interactions of projects of the 1st funding period as well as the research of new material-process combinations. These are accompanied by intensive feedback through computational modelling and new structural design approaches. An important extension of the objectives is the reduction of environmental impacts at the different levels of materials, components and structural systems. Finally, TRR 277 provides an excellent space for the future generation of young scientists to gain new insights and exchange ideas, both in their specific field of research and in interdisciplinary collaboration.
