調査地区の1つでもある春国岱では、砂嘴の先端部の付け根に当たる部分が地盤沈下、風波・侵食等の影響により予想より幅広く大きく亀裂して決壊をしていた。今回先端部分へは海水の中に入ってかろうじて対岸へ渡れたが、予想より潮流も速く、今後さらに侵食されることが予想される。護岸工事等の修復についても地理的に工事の難しい場所でもあった。今回、研究目的である風蓮湖岸の塩湿地植物群落の分布や立地環境について湖岸踏査により調査を行った。特に塩湿地植物群落の指標となるアッケシソウ群落を中心に分布状況の把握に努めた。調査地については、ヤリムカシ川、ソウサンベツ川、アッコンベツ川、厚床川、別当賀川、風蓮川等の大きな河川河口部を中心した湖岸を含め、根室海峡から海水が入り込む海の近い湖岸から湖の深部湖岸まで歩いて調査を行った。風蓮湖岸調査を通して海水の入り込む海に近い場所にアッケシソウ群落が多く見られた。また、湖の深部湖岸では、川からの真水流入と塩分濃度が下がるため、アッケシソウ群落は多く見られなかった。アッケシソウ群落は、走古丹付近の砂嘴部の湖側に数多く確認された。また春国岱の第1砂丘、第2砂丘、第3砂丘ともに先端部までアッケシソウ群落が数多く見られた。湖岸のすぐそばまでヨシが来ている地形や潮干満潮での流れの速い湖岸については、特に風蓮湖深部となる風連川左岸やヤウシュベツ川河口域左岸や木村川左岸域についてはアッケシソウ群落を確認することができなかった。その他の主な塩湿地植物群落として別当賀川左岸域はシカギクの大群落、アッコンベツ川右岸ハマシオンの大群落を確認することができた。
