项目摘要

本研究の目的は、明治中期から昭和初期にかけての、宮崎県における社会教育を具体的に明らかにすることである。はじめに、宮崎県文書センター所蔵の簿冊より、実業補習学校、青年訓練所、青年学校、そして夜学会など社会教育機関に関する史料を調査した。次に、それらの設置・廃止時期を一覧にまとめ、学則や教授科目等を整理した。これにより、社会教育機関の変遷を、市町村ごとに網羅することができた。多くの簿冊史料を明治中期から昭和初期の社会教育史料群として把握できたことは、教育史研究の発展に寄与するものであり、地域においてこれらの教育機関が何を求められたのか、どのような役割を果たしたのかを知る上で、示唆に富むものでもある。設置・廃止申請や教授科目の分析を通して、同一郡内においてですら、地域の実情の違いに応じて、教授内容の選択や授業時間に柔軟性をもたせた教育を行ったことが明らかになった。また、設置申請を元に、教科書を収集・分析した。本研究では、特に農業補習学校における農業教科書を分析し、明治後期、実業補習学校が全国的な広がりをみせる中で、教科書を用いてどのような農業教育がなされたのかを考察した。尋常小学校を卒業した生徒に、農業に関する知識だけでなく、修身・道徳なども教授しようと、配慮の行き届いた教科書が多く、執筆者の農業教育への強い熱意が伺えた。宮崎県では明治39年に全県下に実業補習学校(多くは農業補習学校)が設立されたが、41年には早くも減少に転じた。その原因は、農業補習学校での農業教育が、実習地の不足や農業教師の不慣れ等により、農業教科書の意図するところが必ずしも反映されなかったからである。この時期、生徒の学力向上や地域の実情に沿う教育は、青年会などとの結びつきが強い夜学会が担っており、実業補習学校はその後、教員養成所や実習地などの設備面が整うにつれ、有効な教育機関となっていったことを明らかにした。
