○研究目的水平運動と融和運動の双方を橋渡しする独自な部落解放運動団体であった高知県自治団の活動の全体像と、自治団に結集した人びとが被差別部落出身という社会的出自のなかで、部落問題と対峙しつつ、部落解放への展望を見出していった道筋とを明らかにすること○研究方法高知市立自由民権記念館所蔵の「植村省馬資料」および県外機関の所蔵する資料、新聞記事などを活用して、高知県自治団の運動の独自性の解明につとめた。○研究成果1927年から活動を開始した高知県自治団は、「外」には「融和」を「内」には「覚醒」を求める「新文化運動」を展開した。自治団には被差別部落内外の数多くの人びとが結集していくが、注目されるのは、高知県水平社の運動が下火となるこの時期に、水平社の活動家の大半を自治団に吸収しえたことと、水平社の活動家を団員としながらも、「解放令発布記念日」や「融和デー」において部落差別撤廃を社会に強く訴えるなど、高知県公道会と歩調をそろえた運動を展開したことである。ただし、高知県自治団の場合、高知県公道会とは異なり「官」とは距離を置き、あくまでも自主的融和団体として機能し続けた。高知県自治団に結集した被差別部落の人びとは、街頭や演説会の場で部落差別撤廃を訴えたが、そこではしばしば被差別体験も語られ、部落出身を明示することによって、部落差別撤廃の実現を社会に求めようとした。また、部落出身者であることの表出によって、自己を部落解放運動の担い手として強く自覚し、その後も大部分の活動家が一貫して部落解放運動にかかわり続けていくことになる。まさに、高知県自治団における活動が、結集した人びとのその後の行動をも規定したといえる。
