○研究目的米国における理数教育、特にブッシュ政権以来米国政府が力を入れてきたSTEM(科学・技術・工学・数学)教育の実態を把握し、わが国の理数教育と比較することにより有益な示唆を得ることを目的とした。○研究方法米国の理数教育の実際把握のため、米国科学財団(NSF)、アーリントン群教育関係者、マサチューセッツ州の教育実験校、米国衛生研究助(NIH)、各種科学関係博物館等の実地調査・関係者からの意見聴取を行った。また、我が国の状況とも比較するため、文部科学省の理数教育担当者、科学技術振興機構のスーパーサイエンスハイスクール(SSH)担当者、国立教育政策研究所の海外教育研究者等から意見聴取を行うとともに、市川学園(千葉)でのSSH公開授業、奈良県のSSHの成果発表会に参加し、関係者との議論を行った。○研究成果これにより、米国は我が国に比べ連邦政府の教育への影響は弱く、教育全体に占める予算が少ないこと、一方、州や郡が中心となるため、各地域の裕福度や文化格差等を反映した教育の地域格差が生じており、STEM教育による理数面での全体的底上げについては、教育現場での効果はあまり見られていないという実態が分かった。しかし、教育格差を平準化するため、郡は域内全般で使えるような教科書作りを、また大学等ではNSFの支援等も受け、ITなども利用した各種の優れた教材作りが行われていることも分かった。また、我が国のSSHのような制度はなく、SSH制度の卓越性が逆に理解できたが、一方、米国では一般に高校まで義務教育であるものの、試験選抜によるマグネットスクール等の優秀な学校ではすぐれた英才教育が行われているという実態も把握できた。
