奥州藤原氏の勢力を支えたものに馬・ワシ羽・海獣皮等があるが、なかでも同地方で産出する砂金が最重要であったことはいうまでもない。この砂金はおもに北上山地に産するものとみられているが、はたして同地方の砂金だけで莫大な流通をまかなうことができたのか、疑問の声も少なからずある。このなかで、1962～68年に行われた中尊寺金色堂の解体工事の際、金箔調査に立ち会った探鉱技術者・砂金研究者の秋葉安一氏は、北上山地の金を用いたとみられる金箔に混じって、北海道日高産の可能性が高い金箔が使用されていることを肉眼で確認した。しかしこの指摘にもかかわらず、これを自然科学的な手法で確認しようとする調査はその後行われてこなかった。一方、10～13世紀の北海道では、厚真町や平取町など胆振日高山中の狭隘な谷筋に古代アイヌの集落が密集し、また高価な本州産金銅製鏡が多く出土するなどきわめて特異な状況を見せており、なぜ古代の胆振日高山中にこのような状況が現出したのか、議論が交わされてきている。秋葉氏の指摘を踏まえれば、胆振日高は有数の砂金産地であることから、その砂金が古代から東北北部に移出されていた可能性は十分に考えられる状況にある。藤原氏の勢力を支えた金が、北海道産を含むものであったとすれば、当時の北方世界の交流をめぐるイメージは大きな転換を迫られ、古代中世の北海道・東北史にはかりしれない影響をおよぼすことになろう。本研究では上記の課題に迫るため3つの作業を行った。1中尊寺金色堂関係の金箔及び北上山系出土砂金の化学分析用資料の提供について平泉町役場の文化財担当者と打ち合わせを行い、平成25年度に協力を得られることになった。またこれら資料の調査を行った。2北上山系砂金との比較用に北海道出土砂金を約20サンプル入手し、函館高専において蛍光X線分析器による成分分析を実施した。そのデータについては上記の平泉関係金資料の成分分析後に公表する。3厚真町内の河川において北海道砂金史研究会会長らの協力を得て砂金の採取を実施し、これまで砂金が確認されていなかった同地域で初めて砂金を確認した。これにより、厚真町の山間部に密集する古代集落が砂金採取と関わるものであった可能性について見通しをもつことができた。
