本研究では、日本列島北部域における弥生-古墳併行期の文化である「続縄文」文化設定資料の検討を行った。続縄文は、大正15年における北海道室蘭市本輪西貝塚の調査事例に基づき、日本における先史考古学の基礎を築いた山内清男により設定された先史文化であるが、この調査については詳細が明らかにされず、その後蓄積された資料と当時構想された文化内容との対照が、研究の進展に伴い大きな課題となっていた。この課題の解明には、当時の続縄文文化設定資料に立ち戻るほかない。実際のところ、本輪西貝塚は現状が大きく改変されており、また山内以外にも大山柏・河野常吉、長谷部言人ら当時の考古学・人類学を代表する研究者による調査がなされており、出土資料とこれら複数時の調査情報を照合整理し、当時の調査の全容と遺跡の内容を把握することが基礎的な作業となる。このため、山内調査資料が所蔵される東京大学総合研究博物館を中心に、関連資料や調査文献が所在する独立行政法人国立文化財機構奈良文化財研究所、旭川市立博物館、北海道大学フィールド科学センター植物園及び北海道立図書館において資料及び記録類の調査を行った。一連の資料調査の結果、本輪西貝塚から出土した現存資料のほぼ全容を把握しえた。山内調査資料については、既存文献で公表されてきた少数の資料以外には確定的なものが少なく、縄文晩期から続縄文にかけての変遷を示すとされた層位的出土状況を証明する資料は確認できない。これらについては、戦前からの度重なる資料移動などによるものと推測され、継続的な追跡調査も必要とされるが、山内以外の調査者による出土資料を含めた検討により、遺跡の時間的な継続性や個別時期における考古学的様相など、本輪西貝塚の概略を把握しえた。こうした資料調査の成果については、必要な図化や計測等を併せて実施しており、資料所蔵先の意向も踏まえ、順次公表を予定している。

This study is to explore the cultural setting data of the northern Japanese archipelago. The Yamauchi Survey data were collected from the Center for Comprehensive Research Museum of the University of Tokyo, and related data and records were collected from the Nara Institute of Cultural Property, an independent administrative corporation, the Asahikawa Municipal Museum, the Hokkaido University Science and Technology Botanical Garden, and the Hokkaido Library.
