1 研究目的本研究は、南九州(宮崎県・鹿児島県を中心とする地域)において鉄道敷設法施行後から昭和戦前期までに計画された官設・私設の鉄道と軌道すべてを対象とし、各路線敷設に対する要求や動き、計画の実際について明らかにし、敷設線実現の要因、未成線の実態などの検討を行うため、南九州の敷設線・未成線に関する史料を収集し、敷設計画・要求の内容について両者を比較し分析することを目的とした。2 研究方法日本近代史・鉄道関係の専門書等を購入し、史料調査・収集を行った。鉄道博物館と国立公文書館が所蔵する「鉄道省文書」を調査し、マイクロフィルムからの複写と原文書の撮影により収集した。鹿児島県内の史料所在については黎明館等へ聞き取り調査を行い、南さつま市教育委員会及び鹿児島交通所蔵の南薩鉄道関係史〓の調査・撮影を実施した。さらに、南薩鉄道初代社長宅に残されていた襖の下張り文書を入手した。宮崎県内では、宮崎軽便鉄道・県営鉄道に関する調査を行い撮影により収集した。また、国立国会図書館、鹿児島県及び宮崎県立図書館にて鉄道敷設関係人物・団体等を調査し、必要な文献・資料を複写した。収集した史料は人件費を使用して整理し、「鉄道省文書」のデータ入力を行い、全簿冊を対象に件名目録を作成した。そして、宮崎県・鹿児島県の路線に関するデーター覧、発起人データー覧などを作成し、論文等の作成に備えた。3 研究成果平成24年度は「鉄道省文書」については史料件名目録を作成し、『宮崎県総合博物館研究紀要』において公表した。今後は研究会の機関誌に掲載するため大正期の南九州における軽便鉄道の敷設に関する論文をまとめて発表し、さらに、本研究の成果を含むテーマで講演及び講座を行う予定である。
