外国語学習の分野では生徒の「気づき」を引き出す授業の創造が求められている。そこで、「データ駆動型学習法」を用いた帰納的な英語の語彙・文法指導の方法について研究を行った。データ駆動型学習法では,ターゲットとなる文法項目をKWIC (keywords in context)という提示方法で,学習者は言語データを見ながらルールを自ら発見して学ぶ。例えば、interestedを題材とした場合、「interestedの主語には人が多く,interestingの主語には人以外の物が多い」ということに気づく。このように,interestedとinteresting, excitedとexciting, boredと〓ing等の使い分けは成人学習者にも難しい文法事項であるが,「データ駆動型学習法」を用いて帰納的に学ぶことで,興味を引き出し記憶の定着を図ることができた。従来の指導方法とデータ駆動型学習法の指導効果を比較したところ,3カ月後の保持テストの結果からデータ駆動型学習法による指導は学習事項の定着度が高いことが確認できた。また,質問紙調査の結果からは,学習者が「規則を発見するのは面白い」「先生から規則を教えられるよりも自分で考えるので記憶に残る」と感じていたことが確認でき,データ駆動型の学習方法が学習者の興味とやる気を引き出すことも確認された。さらに,全国公開授業研究会において「自らルールを発見する学習者中心の文法指導」と題して授業実践を行ったところ,「いま最も必要とされている手法である」「やり方についてもっと詳しく知りたい」「自分もやってみたい」などの意見が多数寄せられた。本研究においてデータ駆動型語彙・文法学習教材を増やし指導法と教材の普及に努めることは,文法指導で苦慮している現場に対する大きな貢献であり,時代の要請にあう研究であると考える。
