本研究では、幕末に香港および上海租界から横浜居留地へ進出した洋服仕立て業者に着目し、営業の実態や日本人への仕立て技術伝播の実態を明らかにすることを目的とした。横浜居留地で開業した洋服仕立て業者の多くは、"香港および上海租界を経由した欧米業者"と"香港および上海租界において欧米業者から仕立て技術を習得した中国業者"である。資料は、Directoryや開港場で発行された英字新聞などを用いた。また、香港大学図書館および香港中央図書館では19世紀の香港および上海租界に関する調査を行った。その結果、欧米業者は横浜より先に開業した香港店や上海店において経験を積んだ経営者や職人を横浜店で雇用したことが明らかになった。彼らは、材料の販売から仕立てまで一貫した経営を行ったほか、部門別による経営によって服飾品から日用品まで多様な商品を扱ったうえ、現金取引や割引販売を行い、不特定多数の顧客を相手に洋服仕立て業を商業として発展させていったことがわかった。慶応の頃には、彼らから独立し開業する者が現れ始めた。これに対し、中国業者は専ら仕立て業に従事し、明治期に入ると欧米業者を上回る数の店舗を設け洋服仕立て業界に台頭していった。顧客の多くは居留する外国人をはじめ寄港する船員や商人であり、軍服の仕立ても請け負っていたことが明らかになった。また、日本人は富裕層が顧客となり得た一方で、欧米業者および中国業者に従業員として勤める者もおり、横浜居留地は洋服仕立て技術を習得する場となった。なかには、欧米業者を自らの店(横浜や東京)に雇い、仕立て技術を習得する者も認められた。以上によって、洋服仕立て業という西洋文化が中国を介して日本に持ち込まれたことを明らかにした。このことは、日本の服飾文化史のみならず中国の服飾文化史の進展にも貢献することが出来る。成果の一部は、平成25年度に博士論文にまとめ提出し、受理された(共立女子大学大学院)。
