本研究では、視覚障害特別支援学校の歩行指導における指導方法・内容等を構成する上での基礎的な資料を得ることを目的とし、先天性視覚障害児が教室等の身体移動を伴う大規模空間を定位・移動する際に有効となる手がかりについて検討した。対象児は先天性視覚障害児3名であり、全員点字により学年相応の学習を進めていたが、担任等から校舎内の移動等に何らかの困難があるという報告をうけていた。対象児にとって未知の状態である教室において、触地図の構成と移動の指導実践を行った。具体的な方法として、まずドアなどわかりやすい基点を設けて移動の出発点とし、基点と各配置物の距離と方向が身体運動感覚により把握できるようにした。また、触地図を用いて教室全体の形状を明確にしたり、教室の各壁と各配置物との位置関係を明確にしたりすることなど、外部参照枠の存在と活用方法を指導した。さらに、基点を別の地点に変更して同様の手続きで指導を行ない、複数の地点からの配置を学習し、各地点からの配置を統合できるようにした。その結果、対象児は基点から各配置物までの移動が正確となり、移動の所要時間は短縮された。すなわち、触地図を用いて空間の全体像を把握させ、外部参照枠の利用を促す指導の有効性が明らかとなった。また、対象児のボディイメージチェックリストの結果から、自己の左右認知が確立され、他者の左右認知についてもほぼ理解できている児童において、本研究における指導の効果が認められると考えられた。
