本研究は、17世紀末から18世紀前半にかけて日本から欧州へ輸出された肥前磁器における漆装飾の全容を解明し、陶磁史における漆装飾磁器の意義を明らかにすることを最終的に目指している。本年度は、そのための基礎的研究の一部として、英国に現存する漆装飾磁器の実態と特色を明らかにすることを目的とした。研究の方法としては、肥前磁器および漆装飾磁器が所蔵されている英国内のカントリー・ハウスや個人コレクションなど9箇所において、漆装飾磁器と関連資料の調査をおこなった。そこで得られた情報や写真データと、前年度の調査における成果をふまえ、英国に現存する漆装飾磁器の特色についての検討をおこなった。本研究の成果としてまず挙げられるのは、英国内には、17世紀末から18世紀前半に作られた肥前産の漆装飾磁器が少なくとも17点存在し、作例が多様性に富むことが明らかとなったことである。また、ノステル・プライオリーに現存する4点揃いのガーニチャー(壼と瓶の装飾用セット)は、金地を主体とする漆装飾タイプの典型であり、オリジナルの装飾を保っている希少な作例である。その装飾手法の技術的出自について検討を加えることができたのは、漆装飾磁器の全体像を明らかにしていく上で意義があったと思われる。一方、本来の漆装飾ではなく、英国あるいは欧州において漆装飾風の加飾が加えられた作例を複数確認した。英国および欧州における漆装飾磁器の需要と影響について考える上で重要である。また、所蔵者のご厚意により成分分析用の試料を入手することができた点も成果の一つである。今後、漆装飾の塗膜構造や使用された原料、技術、加飾地について、多角的な考察を可能とする判断材料として意義があり、科学分析が今後の課題である。さらに、英国内の陶磁研究者との意見交換も有意義であった。漆装飾の構造や成分に関する先行研究についての情報も得ることができた。
