本校では、母語を対象とした「ことばへの気づき」活動(大津由起雄)と、「言語への目覚め」活動(吉村雅仁・岩坂泰子)を統合し、児童の認知能力やメタ言語意識を高めることを目標とした「言語・文化」の授業実践を行った。子どもの認識や発達段階を考慮し、5年では言語や文化の多様性、6年では言語の規則性を焦点化して学ぶ。大学が有する人的リソースや学習環境を活用しながら授業開発や実践を試みた。5年では一学級に複数の留学生が入り交流した。複数の言語を並列に提示することで「外国語=英語」ではなく世界には様々な言語があることを知る。同時に多言語を扱ったことで言語をグループに分類し始めた。授業後の子どもの感想には「ルーマニア語とハンガリー語は『おはよう』と『こんばんは』は言葉はちがうけど、中国とベトナムは同じで驚いた。」とあり、一日中同じあいさつの言葉で通る地域とそうでない地域があることに気づき驚きを感じていた。多言語を扱ったことで言語や文化の共通性や相違性に気づくことができた。6年では母語(日本語)を礎にし直感を働かせてことばのしくみにせまる授業を試みた。文字の構造(ハングル文字)の授業では、子どもたちは既習のローマ字をてがかりにハングル文字が【子音+母音】でできていることに気づく。授業後、「韓国語にも母音と子音があってローマ字や日本語との共通点がわかった。」など文字の構造にせまる感想が73%をしめた。その後言語への興味が高まり、【子音+母音】からなる世界の文字を調べる、世界の様々な数字の共通性を推測して調べるなど、自発的に言語や文字について学習をしてくる子どもが増えた。これらの学習は子どもたちのメタ言語意識を向上させ、言語や文化の多様性に対する寛容な態度を養うのに有効であり、中学以降の「外国語」の学習の素地になっていくことが期待される。
