研究目的 : 日本のなかでも個性的でユニークな存在である沖縄の動植物方言を、絶滅するまえに、緊急に調査し記録する。研究方法 : 動植物に詳しいインフォーマントを単独または複数人員に写真を見せて方言の調査を行う。写真はパワーポイントを利用して提示し、単独の場合はタブレット、複数人員の場合は液晶プロジェクタで投影したもので行なう。研究成果 : 植物方言は、利用と関連し、種に対応した多くの方言が認められた。今後の調査効率と進展を図るために、初島・天野(1994)の植物目録の各種にID番号を付した。読谷村長浜においては植物約150件、動物約90件の方言を得ることができた。注目される成果として、ミーガークーガという方言が那覇市ではナシカズラの実、読谷村長浜ではタマシダの根、南城市屋比久ではギョボクの実であった。いずれも戦前の沖縄の旧盆の時に供えていたものである。同一方言がそれぞれ異なる別の植物に充てられていることが注目された。また、よく知られているシークヮーサーの語源についても、シー(酸味)をクヮーサー(与えるもの)の意味があり、昔の沖縄では芭蕉布をシークヮーサーで洗っており、シークヮーサーの酸味で萎びた芭蕉布を蘇らせたという。シークヮーサーと芭蕉布との関連がわかった。これらはいずれも、平成27年度中には報告する予定である。
