シンクロナイズドスイミング競技におけるスカーリング(スカルともいう)動作は、競技中のすべての動きに関連し、演技の完遂度を左右する重要な技術である。そこで、静止状態でのスカーリング動作を水中よりビデオ撮影し、3次元画像分析によってスカーリング動作の特性を明らかにしようとした。また、競技では身体を水上に高く維持することが求められるため、選手の浮力との関わりをみるために水中体重および各姿勢における浮力の測定を行った。被験者はアトランタオリンピック日本代表チーム選手1名および日本代表Aチーム選手2名の計3名であった。その結果、3選手の浮力については、クレーン姿勢(垂直姿勢で片足を水上に出した姿勢)で6.6kg、バレーレッグシングル姿勢で8.5kg、ダブル垂直姿勢で6.9kgの減少がみられたことから、最低6〜8kgを支持する推進力をサポートスカルで発揮しなければならないことがわかった。3選手の水中体重の平均は1.3kg、体脂肪率は平均24.2%であった。スカーリング動作については、動作の支点である肘の位置が身体からかなり離れていること、また肘をできるだけ動かさないことおよびスカル動作が小さい方がのぞましいと指導されているが、実際にはかなり動いており広い範囲でスカル動作が行なわれていることなどが明らかになった。そして、ダブル垂直姿勢の水位を膝から5cm上にあげるためには、非常に大きなスカーリング力を必要とすることがわかった。
