本研究では、高校運動部員が部活活動や日常生活において経験する危機事象を特定し、それらの危機状事象に対する対処行動の質から、高校運動部員の自我発達の一般的特徴を明らかにすることを目的とした。まず、Lovingerら(1970)の文章完成テストによって測定された自我発達得点を、学年(1年・2年)、競技レベル(高・低)、レギュラー状態(レギュラー・非レギュラー)の3つの観点から比較した。その結果、高校2年生の方が、1年生よりも自我発達水準が高いことが明らかにされた。競技レベルとレギュラー状態においては両群の差はみられず、こうした属性は自我発達に関連しないことが示された。次に、どのような体験が運動部員の自我発達を促進するのかを明らかにするために、高校運動部員にとって重要となる危機事象として、「チームメイトとの関係」などの4つのスポーツ領域での危機事象と、「勉強」などの8つの日常生活領域での危機事象を設定した。そして、個々の危機事象に対して、「これまでにどの程度迷ったり考えたか(crisis)」、「迷ったときに、それを克服するためのどの程度努力したか(exploration)」、「今の自分にとって、その程度努力すべき事象となっているか(commitment)」の3側面から対処行動の質を調査した。同時に、文章完成テストによって自我発達の程度を測定し、危機事象に対する対処行動の質と自我発達の関連について検討を加えた。その結果、自我発達の高い運動部員は低い部員よりも、運動領域でのexploration得点とcommitment得点が高かった。日常生活領域では3つの得点のいずれにおいても両群に差はみられなかった。これらの結果から、運動領域で遭遇する危機事象に対して積極的な対処行動を起こすことによって自我発達が促進されることが示された。
