本年度は、中学運動部員の自我発達の一般的特徴を明らかにすることを目的とした。まず、中学運動部員2・3年生402名を対象に、Loevingerらの文章完成テスト実施し、自我発達と競技レベルの関係について検討を加えた。競技レベルを低・中・高の3群に分割し、3群の自我発達得点を比較した。その結果、男子では低競技レベル群の自我発達得点が最も低く、高競技レベル群の自我発達得点が最も高かった。また、自我発達得点が高い群(上位25%、高自我発達群)と低い群(下位25%、低自我発達群)を抽出し、両群の試合での実力発揮度を比較した。その結果、有意水準には達しなかったが、男女ともに高自我発達群の方が実力発揮度が高かった。これらの結果より、自我発達に支えられながら競技レベルが上昇していくことが推測された。さらに、どのような領域でのどのような体験が自我発達を促進するのかを明らかにするために、 「チームメイトとの関係」などの4つのスポーツ領域での事象と、「勉強」などの6つの日常生活領域での事象を設定し、個々の事象に対する「悩みの程度」 ・ 「解決のための努力の程度」と自我発達との関連について検討を加えた。その結果、男女ともに、全体的には高自我発達群が低自我発達群よりも悩みの程度と努力の程度が高い傾向が見られた。そして、男子では特にスポーツ領域として取り上げられた事象において、一方、女子では特に対人関係にかかわる事象において、高自我発達群が低自我発達群よりも悩みの程度と努力の程度が高かった。これらのことから、必ずしも運動部経験のみによって自我発達が促進されるとは限らないが、中学運動部員にとって時間的な関与が多い部活動での危機経験ならびに危機解決に向けた努力が自我発達を促進すると推測された。
