本研究では、近世朝廷における「天下触穢」(以下、天下触穢と略す)の分析を通して、中〜近世における為政者の死をめぐる思想の歴史的展開過程とその近世的構造とを解明することを目的とした。具体的には、朝廷内部における天下触穢の決定過程に注目しつつ、その特質について明らかにすることを試みた。本年度における研究の実施によって得られた新たな知見は、次の通りである。1. 近世の天下触穢がその要因によって類型化でき、そのなかに近世特有のものが確認できること。上記の諸要因のなかで、もっとも重要と考えられる将軍の死をめぐる天下触穢について分析をおこなったところ、17世紀半ばまでの朝廷では、将軍の死が穢-秩序の破壊-と認識されており、中世と同様の政治的決定・対応がなされていたこと。2. ところが、17世紀半ばから18世紀にかけて、触穢観念自体が形骸化し、触穢の実施も儀礼として認識されるようになっていたこと。また、この触穢観念の変化に対応する形で、触穢の決定過程自体も先例主義的決定に変化していたこと。これは、将軍の死が秩序の破壊と認識されないという、まさに安定期における触穢観念の再編といえ、この変化こそが天下触穢の近世的特質と位置づけられること。3. 今後は、課題のなかで達成することができなかった、天下触穢の問題を為政者の死をめぐる思想の問題として捉え返す試みを、引き続きおこなっていきたい。
