本研究では、近世東北諸藩における為政者の死をめぐる服喪儀礼について、「鳴物停止令」以下、停止令と略す)を素材として、二つの課題を設定した。その第一は中近世移行期における停止令の成立過程を、幕府政治の問題としてだけでなく、諸藩の動きと関連させた形で考察すること、第二は藩独自に施行される停止令の構造的特質を解明することである。つまり同研究は、東北諸藩における服喪儀礼の成立と構造の特質を明らかにすることを試みたものといえる。盛岡藩等の分析を通して明らかになった新たな知見は、以下の通りである。まず第一に、戦国期・近世初期の藩領では為政者の死に際して停止令を施行していないこと、ところが17世紀半ば以降、幕府停止令の領内施行を契機として、藩側は停止令を受容し、それを藩独自の構造をもった儀礼として再生産する形で展開してゆくことが明らかになった。つまり、停止令の淵源は戦国・近世大名支配にあるのではなく、幕府による先行措置として位置づけられるべきものであり、幕府停止令の藩領施行を契機として藩における政治的成立をみることがわかった。第二に、諸藩領における停止令は幕府・藩独自という二重構造をとっていたが、後者は藩主を頂点とした独自の体系とより強い規制内容を掲げており、それぞれの藩領固有の儀礼秩序を形成するうえで大きな意味を持ったことなどが明らかになった。なお、藩領と江戸藩邸における政治的対応の有機的連関といった幕藩関係の側面、近世中期以降の停止令の歴史的展開過程、外様・譜代藩の比較等については、残された課題としたい。
