本研究では、色空間内の白色点を中心にさまざまな方向に色度(色コントラスト)を変化させ、その色刺激の検出および弁別に寄与する色覚システムの特性を検討することを通じて、色覚のメカニズムを心理物理学的に解明することを目的とした。この目的に沿って、まず、白色点からの色度変化の検出閾を測定し、続いて、コントラスト変調順応後の検出閾の変化を検討した。ここで、コントラスト変調順応とは、白色点を中心に色度を時間的に変調させ、それに対して順応させる手続きを指す。コントラスト変調順応の際には、時間的に平均すると刺激の輝度と色度が一定となることから、錐体の順応状態は変化せず、錐体以降のレベルにおいて順応が生じることが示されている。したがって、コントラスト変調順応の効果の選択性を分析することにより、検出に寄与する色覚システムの特性を明らかにすることができる。本研究の結果は、2種類以上の色覚システムの寄与を支持し、L-M方向およびS錐体のみの活動量が変化する方向だけでなく、その他の方向の順応刺激を用いた場合にも、色度変化方向に選択的な順応が認められた。続いて、検出閾付近の刺激を用いて、色相の弁別に関して検討したところ、検出閾付近であっても色相の弁別は可能であった。このことは、白色点近傍の色度変化の検出には、特定の色相の知覚を媒介する複数の色覚システムが寄与していることを示している。さらには、2種類の刺激の一方の色度変化方向を基準として固定し、他方の色度変化方向を小刻みに動かして色弁別率を検討することにより、各色相を媒介する色覚システムの関数とバンド幅の分析を行った。現在、これまで得られた成果を公表するための準備を進めるとともに、色覚のメカニズムをさらに明らかにするために、以上の分析により得られるバンド幅に対してコントラスト変調順応が及ぼす影響を検討すること、さらに、色名法を用いて閾上の刺激に関して色覚システムのバンド幅を検討することを計画している。
