本研究の対象地である秋田県鹿角郡小坂町はかつての鉱業都市であり、産業構造の転換とともに現在では県内一人口流出率が高い一方、流入率も低くはなく、Uターンと定住をめぐる過程が存在する。地方から都市への移動は、地位達成資源の獲得機会が増大する方向で行われるが、他方、そのような都市的地域に移動することは、自宅という資源の獲得を通した定住においてはマイナスに働く。他方、地方都市あるいは農村地域においては、「住む」という事実にもとづいた生活を設計せざるをえない。その際の条件は、個人が社会関係ネットワークに組み込まれており、いざというときの保障が得られることである。本研究の結果、現在小坂町に居住している住民の、出生コーホート別の移動傾向を見ると、各コーホートともUターン者の転出は10歳代が、逆に転入(Uターン)は20歳代がもっとも多くなっており、しかも転入の絶対数は微増傾向にあること、他方、他地域出身者の転入はやはり20歳代がもっとも多いが、こちらは漸減傾向にあることが明らかになった。移動理由を見ると、Uターン者に関しては、高校卒業後、教育機会、就業機会を求めて転出し、実家の都合や親の扶養を機に戻るというパターンが認められ、他地域出身者に関しては圧倒的に結婚を理由とするケースが多い。また、70年代以降はよりよい住居を理由とするケースが増えている。小坂町において階層性の最も高いのはUターン層であり、社会関係も豊かである。つまり、都市において地位達成資源を獲得したことと、社会関係に基づく保障も期待できることとが両立した存在となっている。このような効果の二重性こそが地方都市に居住する移動者を特徴づけていると言えよう。
