大学生はどのような性役割文化を形成しているのか、また進路決定のうえで、そのような性役割文化やジェンダー秩序がどのように関与しているのかについて調査した。対象は、新潟大学を中心とし、その他首都圏も含めて全部で10の大学・短大の学生であり、アンケート調査と聴き取り調査を実施した。その結果、「夫は外、妻は内」といった明示的な性別分業についての意識は高くないが、「男らしさ」や「女らしさ」についての意識はやはり保持していた。特に男性イメージについての聴き取りでは肉体的・身体的な強さをあげるものがほとんどであり、そういった男性文化は、男子学生の多くが肉体労働を肯定的に評価する態度を示したことにもみられる。また、無償性、実用性などのように、「らしさ」とは多少意味が異なるが、性別固有の特性もみられた。ライフヒストリーとライフ計画についての質問では、キャリア計画について語るときの男子学生の雄弁さと女子学生の語彙の貧弱さが特徴的であった。他方で将来の家族像や家族計画については、それほど差はみられなかった。女子学生でさまざまな可能性を追求しているものは、ネットワークが多様で、多くの文化・学習・ボランティア活動に携わっているものであった。家庭について親から学んだことについての質問ではとまどうものが多くみられた。帰宅時間や外泊禁止などのような生活習慣については答えるものは多かったが、生活信条、価値観などについては答えられる者が少なかった。家庭で親からうけつぐもの、メディアや身の回りの他者から伝達されるものは、性役割にしてもその他の価値観にしても明示的な形はあまりとっておらず、いわゆるハビトゥスの形でそれぞれの学生が身につけ自分の生き方を決めていっている姿がうかがえる。
