華人宗教と呼ばれる三教合一的な宗教において行われている霊媒によるセアンスである問神のなかで、依頼者とのやりとりで交わされる対話を大きくわけると二つの方向から考えた。一つは社会イデオロギーの霊媒による反復行為として、もう一つは依頼者自身がすでに作り上げている物語の生成過程として、という方向である。イデオロギーの反復として考える場合、社会イデオロギーの貫徹と身体化について考えなければならない、そこで個人の経験について論考を深めるために、まず歴史をさかのぼって華人の経験や社会組織に着目し、既成の社会規範あるいは社会秩序と人々がどのような関係をもち、華人宗教の寺廟組織がそのなかでどのようなイデオロギー効果をもたらす存在となったのか検証を試みた、この成果は「シンガポールにおける華人の社会組織」としてまとめられた。また他方、依頼者自身がすでに作りあげている物語として考えた場合、問題の当事者ではなく、依頼者という立場の人々が、しかも大半が女性である彼女たちが置かれている社会的な位置や父権社会のなかでの家族の役割あるいは父権主義イデオロギーを支える祖先祭祀の役割などについて考えた。そして依頼者がもちだす依頼の物語のなかに、問題の当事者がどのように位置づけられいるのか、あるいは排除されているのかについて、邪術という点から検討し、その成果は「個人をめぐる語り」として著した。
