「刷毛目」の原体同定を行う場合、瓦や鏡などの静止圧痕による同定ではなく、擦痕による同定である点に問題が残る。同一原体の異なる部位、同一板材の断ち切りや打ち割りによる類似原体の存在などを考慮する必要がある。そのため、杉の柾目・追柾目材を使用して「刷毛目」調整の原体同定に係わる実験を行った。「刷毛目」は器表面を平滑にするだけではなく、器壁を締めつける効果があることを寸法の変化によって確認した。半乾燥した段階ではその効果が薄く、生段階の柔らかい状態で施したほうが効果が大きい。また、「刷毛目」によって器壁が延ばされ、器形が変形することは広く知られているが、それによって粘土が移動し、枯土紐の接合痕が擬口縁のように変形することが分かった。原体同定に際しては、静止圧痕では瓦や鏡のように傷の増加を確認することが顕著な目印になる。しかし、「刷毛目」の場合にはできた傷はほどなく消えてゆくことが確認された。使用の度合いや前後関係を識別することは不可能である。また、原体の側端を確認することができれば、同一原体の異なる部位かどうかの識別が容易であることが実験によって判明した。しかし、同一板材から採取された異なる原体の識別はその部位によって困難を極める。木目と木取りによって様々な例があったと想定されるが、「刷毛目」の原体同定は、擦痕の観察という限界をもったものであり、安易に打ち割りなどによる別原体であると判断できないものが存在することに注意しておく必要がある。これらを類似原体として、瓦や鏡などの原体同定とは区別して論を進める必要がある。
