シェイクスピアの『ウィンザーの陽気な女房たち』の4幕1場は本筋とは無関係なラテン語文法レッスンの場であり、Q版には存在しなかったことから、その存在意義についてこれまで様々な憶測を呼んできた。だが、この場面を作品全体に見られる多様で特異な言語スタイルとの関連で見直すと、この芝居の新たな面が見えてくる。本研究では、4幕1場とその前後にある二つの洗濯籠の場を中心に取り上げ、その特異な言語スタイルを、葛藤が起きてもすぐ脱線しいつのまにか立ち消えになってしまうアクションと絡めて考察した。特に、本作品の主人公フォールスタッフが洗濯籠に入れられ運搬されて河に放り込まれる喜劇的場面は、舞台化されずにフォールスタッフ本人の語りで処理されるのだが、ここには「運搬、移動、窃盗、翻訳」に関するこの作品のテーマが集約されている。結局、この作品は、洗濯籠の場と4幕1場を境にして喜劇の質が変わっているように思われる。最終幕では、フォールスタッフ一人に贖罪を負わせるのではなく、むしろ芝居の構造と言語のあり方そのものに自浄作用が働いており、それがこの喜劇の質を決定している。本作品は広い意味での「移動・運搬・翻訳」を根幹に据え、Aの世界からBの世界への移行のズレや拡散をプロットの起動力に仕立てながら、通常の市民喜劇に見られる陰謀喜劇でも祝祭喜劇でもアリストファネス型喜劇でもない新しい形の喜劇形態へのシェイクスピアの実験的散文劇と考えられる要素が見られるのではないか。
