存在所有動詞の調査に関して、本年度は、主に日本語と英語の比較対照を中心として二年問の研究の総括を試みた。本年度の研究で明らかになったことは、日本語の所有の意味を表す所有構文と英語の存在構文とがその統語特性において顕著な類似性を示すということである。これは、この構文がこの二つの言語においてともに存在・所有・場所という三つの意味を表す特別な動詞が用いられていることに起因するものであることが判明した。さらに、この構文は、それぞれの言語でかなり基本的な構文となっており、意味的拡張・文法化がかなり進んでいることがわかった。特に、日本語に、英語とよく似た意味的拡張・文法化が起こっているということは、当研究を進めてゆく過程で判明したもので、本研究での思わぬ副産物となった。このような現象は、他の多くの言語でも、例えば、調査した言語の中では、フランス諸、オランダ語、シンハラ語などにおいて見られ、かなり、普遍的な特徴であることもわかった。このことは、科研の研究開始当初の仮説が検証されたということで、当初の計画の主な目的が達せられたといえる。なお、今年度の研究成果の一部は、科研のレビューのために訪問したコーネル大学のセミナーで発表するという機会を得ることができた。その他にも、第五回TACL夏期言語学会等でも発表の機会を得ることができた。この研究に関する成果を載せた論文としては、第五回TACL夏期言語学会の会議録に、その一部が掲載されたものがある。
