明治期生糸直輸出運動の全国的指導者・星野長太郎は、その郷里(群馬県勢多郡黒保根村水沼)に万余に及ぶ厖大なる関連史料を残している。現在、後裔の杉崎静代氏が管理されているこの「星野長太郎文書」は、その重要性にもかかわらず、今以て多くが未整理の状態に置かれている。しかしながら筆者の検討によれば、これら史料は生糸直輸出運動の実態解明上、全国無比の史料敵価値を有するものと認められる。そこで筆者は、平成9・10両年度にわたり科学研究費補助金の交付を仰ぎつつ、当文書中の未整理史料の整理・複写の作業に努力している。平成10年度に於けるその実績の概要について示すならば、概ね次のようになるであろう。(1) 前年度に引き続いて未整理史料の状況を把握。ダンボール箱40箱以上分、約1万5000点の未整理史料を確認。(2) 次に未整理史料の虫干し、文書用ダンボールへの収納、防虫剤投与等、保存的措置を実施。(3) 次に未整理史料の整理作業に従事、目録作成に必要な情報を封筒に記入して収納。(4) 次に整理済み史料の複写・採訪の作業を実施、継続中。(5) 上記作業に加えて国立国会図書館等、文献所蔵機関にて関連史料の採訪に従事、継続中。
