総実代数体のイテアル類群は虚代数体のイデアル類群に比べ相対的に小さいことが知られている。Greenberg予想は、その違いを明確にするものである。「kを総実な代数体、pを素数とするとき、kの円分Z、拡大においては、イデアル類群のp部分は有界であろう」というのがその予想であるが、現在様々な状況証拠はあるものの、大きな結果は未だ得られていない。本研究では、1970年代にGreenberg氏Candiotti氏らが与えた虚のZ_p拡大を用いる予想の判定法がこれまで多くの数学者によって与えられていた判定法とどのように関係するかについて明確にすることができた。その結果Z_p-拡大を用いる方法が本質的に強力なものであり、p-分体においてはたとえVandiver予想が成立しなくても、この判定法でGreenberg予想の成立が確かめられるだろうと考察される。
