研究目的は、阪神大震災に直面した学生がどのようにその事象をとらえ対応したかを陸上競技選手を対象として明らかにすることである。1997年度は、震災より1・3ヶ月後に調査した結果をまとめることであった。その結果は、住居を替えている者が約3割存在した。この数は、3ヶ月後において、震災前の場所にもどる者は少なかった。ボランティア活動の参加希望の多い者と競技力の高い者または家屋の半壊の者との間に相関がみられた。また、競技に対する目的意識は、価値観が低下したにも関わらず震災直後より3ヶ月後に勝負感が増したとの回答であった。これは、震災によるプラスの意識改革ではなかろうか。1998年度は、これらの成果をふまえ3回目(震災後3年目)の現状調査を行った。その結果は、震災を経験した者が調査対象者(在学生と当時学生であったすべての卒業生)の45%程度であった。練習環境は、震災後資材置き場等の震災施設使用された場合に場所の移転あるいは整備がなされている。ただし、現在の学生は、これらの環境変化により震災を直接原因と考える者が非常に少ない。競技参加意識に対しても変化ない者がほとんどであった。このことは、在学生にとって震災は過去のものとしてスポーツに対応しているようである。一方、震災を経験した卒業生は、震災に対する価値観が2つに分かれた。1つは、震災に対して現在も直視しボランティア活動等を継続している者と在学生と同様に過去の出来事としてとらえている者に分かれた。今後、当時の震災とスポーツの現状を整理し社会的傾向をふまえてまとめる必要がある。
