本研究は、中世の在地領主をめぐる社会構造が、居館と村落との空間構造に反映されているものと考え、居館・用水・集落の織りなす景観から、在地領主の村落支配の実態を読み解くことを目的としている。中世前期の平野部居館の用水統御機能をめぐっては、近年の発掘調査から疑問の声が上がっており、農業経営者としての在地領主像は、現在では大きく揺らいでいる。本研究では、この中世居館と用水支配の関係について、用水を空間的視角から分析する地理学的の視点から再検討を試みた。近江国の姉川流域を対象として、居館と水利、微地形等を現地調査に基づき分析した結果、居館の立地は中世荘園の水利開発と深く関わっていることが明らかになり、中世前期・後期ともに在地領主が、下司・地頭として荘域の用水支配に深く関わっていた実態が明らかになった。この点から、特に中世前期の在地領主が用水支配を基底とする勧農権を掌握し、荘園制下での一円所領化を実現させていった過程について分析を行った。さらに本研究では、在地領主による用水支配を媒介とした村落支配の実体を、中世後期にいたるまでの領主居館の立地・機能の変遷から分析した。中世後期の村落再編において、惣村とは対照的な領主主導型の集村化事例がみられ、それは用水支配を根拠とした国人領主が、庶子を通じて村落支配を深化していった過程を反映するものである可能性を示した。以上の研究成果の概要は、11月に開催された1998年度人文地理学会大会に、「中世居館と灌漑水利-開発領主と中世村落」と題して報告した。さらにその内容を学術論文としてとりまとめ、現在、学会誌に投稿中である。
