本研究の主眼は江戸時代における市掛商人の具体的活動を究明することにあった。市掛商人の実像を把握することが、近世都市における市町の機能と市場圏形成の展開過程を検討する上で、不可避かつ重要な課題であると考えられるからである。昨年度に史料調査を進めていた茨城県新治村高岡地区、群馬県榛名町下室田地区に加え、本年度は埼玉県比企郡小川町など関東における江戸時代前期の市掛商人の活動に関する史料収集と現地景観調査を進めた。また、江戸時代中期以降の香具商人に関わる問題解明にむけて、新潟県をはじめ東日本各地の事例を収集した。いまだ史料収集とその分析の途中であるが、関東における市掛商人の組織化された活動は寛永期までは広く認めることができた。ただしそこには、形成期の城下町に移住し領主から権益を付与されている者と、在村で商人を組織化している者との分別が可能である。この分別は、やがて寛文期以降にその活動の相違が顕著となり、店舗活動と振売活動との業態の違いへと展開し、さらに在村の振売活動から香具商人の派生が推定される。寛文期に全国的市場圏が形成されていく一方で、それぞれの地域にはより局所的な、市町を核とする流通組織が確立され、商業活動の業態分化が推進されていったと想定される。その意味では、今後継続して市町における店舗商人の系譜について検討を加える必要がある。なお、本研究に関わる研究成果の一部は、立正大学環境科学研究所年報第1号および地球環境研究(立正大学)第2号に発表した。
