本研究は、江戸時代に東日本各地に広範な分布を示す六斎市に注目し、その機能と存立基盤を地域に則して具体的に検討することにより、日本における六斎市の成立と市町展開の関係特質を明らかにすることを目的とした。なかでも、秩父地方の中心、大宮郷の絹市に焦点をあて、市町の展開、市と町の機能的関係の実態解明に重点を置いた。大宮郷では江戸時代前期に、「代買」を業となす絹買宿を中核とした絹取引のしくみが形作られていた。この絹買宿は、主に町屋敷主が営業しており、その分布は宝永6年(1709)の「絹市場之覚」の記載によれば、大宮郷のなかでも下町・中町に偏在していたことが判明した。この事実は、大宮郷の町場が段階的に形成されたことと強く関係している。すなわち、天正18年(1590)以前に下町と中町を範囲とした町の原型が成立し、その後、慶長期前半に新たに上町を加えることで町割を完成させたと想定できる。絹買宿の分布は、市町形成の初期段階における市場区域と不可分の関係にあったと考えられる。さらに、大宮郷の市町形成には、妙見社領との結びつきの強い下町、今宮坊と久保家を中心とした中町、両町の分家や新たな転入者で構成された上町と、各町には異なる来歴をもった集団的性格が認められた。町割を等分に区分し、各町に市を巡立てすること、さらに「家買家売」を禁止して絹市を設定することは、特定の絹買宿による寡占を防ぐ役割を果たすと同時に、町毎に異なる来歴特性をもった市町を運営していくための基底をなした原理であったと理解できる。市の巡立ては六斎市に普遍的に用いられた方法であり、市町形成に不可欠な、市と町とを機能的に関係づける重要な論理であったことを明らかにした。以上の成果の一部は、閉成8年12月、研究代表者岡村が筑波大学に提出した博士(文字)学位請求論文(『六斎市の成立と展開に関する歴史地理学的研究』)に収録した。
