本研究の目的は、内集団へのアイデンティティー(同一化)と忠誠心の心理過程を日米間で比較し、その差異と同質性を明らかにすることであった。この目的達成のために、本年度は相関研究と実験研究をそれぞれ1つずつ実施するとともに、理論の洗練化を行った。第1の相関研究では、日米の大学生を対象とし、所属大学に対する忠誠心の基礎となる要因を検討した。その結果、予測通り、米国人は、所属大学の地位を高く知覚し、自己と大学全体の同一視が強まるほど、大学に対してより強い忠誠心を感じていた。一方日本人は、他の学生たちとの個人レベルの同一視が強まるほど、強い忠誠心を感じていた。この結果は、昨年の研究の結果と一貫して、米国人の内集団アイデンティティーの心理過程は自己カテゴリー化モデルに当てはまるが、日本人の内集団アイデンティティー過程はネットワークモデルに当てはまるという仮説を支持するものであった。第2研究では、米国と日本の社会構造の違いが内集団アイデンティティー過程の違いを生み出すと仮定し、実験を行った。具体的には、米国は大きな集団間に頻繁に利益葛藤が見られる社会、一方日本はそれが比較的見られにくい社会であり、この異なる社会構造的文脈の中で異なる心理過程が生じるとの仮説を立てた。そこで実験室に二つの社会状況を人為的に作り出し、日本人実験参加者の行動がどのように異なるか検討した。参加者たちは、予測どおり、集団間の利益葛藤がある状況の下では自己カテゴリー化モデルから予測されるような集団行動を示し、一方集団間の利益葛藤がない状況のもとではネットワークモデルから予測されるような集団行動を示した。昨年度及び本年度の研究を総括すると、日米間の異なる集団アイデンティティー過程の存在を確認すると共に、その差異の原因の探求に着手した。
