研究課題についてまず、吉田家の日記を検討し、同家発給文書のうち神道裁許状と「宗源宣旨」「鎮札」などを抽出し、その類型化を進め、裁許状の役割を帰納した。その結果、「諸社禰宜神主法度」発布以前から神職の装束を許可した神道裁許状が多数あることが判明した。ここから各地域に神職として認知されるための装束に関する「民俗」(習俗・慣行)の存在を推定し、神職の「職」が装束と密接に関連していたと考えた。「諸社禰宜神主法度」の装束規定条目は、そのような「民俗」の上に勢力を持ち得たと判断した。また、吉田家の日記や、各地の自治体史、先行研究などの記述をもとに、津軽、石見、日向・大隅を対象地域に選定して、神道裁許状の受容理由について事例研究を行った。津軽では、伊勢御師による神職補任「伊勢官」が「諸社禰宜神主法度」発布以降次第に退行し、吉田家による神職補任が圧倒的になってゆく。それが津軽藩の政策に強く規定されたものであることを、先行研究も参照しながら、確認することができた。前年度の調査とあわせて、吉田家とは異質な神職補任「伊勢官」の実態に迫ることもできた。石見および日隅では、神職の名称が宇佐八幡宮の影響下にあったことが推測できた。さらにそれらの地域では、中世後期には神職の地位は「職」と結びつき、その補任が領主によって、「職」の安堵として行われていたことを確認した。このような地域に、特に戦国期以降吉田家の神道裁許状が顕著に受容されていく理由として、神職の「職」を安堵し保証していた、在地に密着した領主の存在が流動的になっており、より高次の権威として吉田家が認識されていたことを推定した。
