昨年は、集落及び古墳出土陶質土器の出土状況をまとめ、西瀬戸内での陶質土器のあり方の重要性を指摘した。それを受け、本年は、西瀬戸内と周辺地域との比較研究を進めた。南九州における資料調査の結果、陶質土器または陶邑産の須恵器とさられていた中に、松山平野産の初期須恵器があることを確認した。出土状況は複数個体、セット関係を保っており、より直接的な移動が想定された。当地域出土陶質土器と松山平野産の初期須恵器は、ともに小規模墳、地域色の強い地下式横穴からの出土であり、出土状況には共通点が多い。当地域への陶質土器の流入に際し、西瀬戸内の関与を具体的資料から想定できるようになった。しかし、畿内との関係を考えなくてはならない横瀬古墳等も存在する。北部九州では集落資料が充実し、総資料は、対馬・壱岐と並んで群を抜く。朝鮮半島に近い点、畿内に通じる交通ルートの要所である点によるものなどが考えられる。古墳出土資料に関しては、西瀬戸内と出土状況に共通点も見られる。松山平野産の初期須恵器は、北部九州地域で確認されず、松山平野以外では、今治市、西条市、岡山市、神戸市で出土している。その多くが、集落から同一器種が複数個体まとまって出土しており、より直接的な移動を示している。この動きから、西瀬戸内以東では、松山平野を介しての陶質土器の移動も十分考えられる。和歌山では、陶質土器の伝世例を確認し、伝世が西瀬戸内のみにとどまる現象ではないことを明らかにできた。特に本年度の成果としては、材質的に近似した在地色の強い初期須恵器が、陶質土器の流入の背景を探る重要な資料となることを示し、それを用いた検討の結果、瀬戸内が単に畿内への交通ルートに位置するだけでなく、陶質土器の流入に際して多様な対応を行っていたことが明らかになった。本研究は西日本を対象としたが、朝鮮半島・東日本を含めた比較検討が今後必要である。
