アウグストゥス帝時代のイギリスにおける文学と商業の関係を考察するにあたり、英米におけるシヴィック・ヒューマニズムの歴史的展開を研究したJ・G・A・ポーコックの著作は重要な歴史的・思想史的枠組を提供している。彼の研究が文学研究においても有益なのは、政治経済的領域にとどまらない「言説」としての「商業」の意義を彼が詳述したためである。「商業」が当時の文学と切り結ぶ関係の重要性は「新経済批評」などの「商業」を鍵概念とした近年の十八世紀文学・文化研究によっても確認されており、本年度の研究により特に以下の三点が重要な問題であることが明らかになった。(1)「土地(land)」と「金(money)」の結合:土地所有に価値基盤を置く「地主的利害」と、交換という商取引により価値を産み出す「貨幣的利害」との結合は、アウグストゥス帝時代の文学に頻出する主題である。当時の社会的対立を象徴的に解消するこのモチーフが個々の文学テクストにおいてどのように表象されているかは、今後詳しく検討すべき課題である。(2)「洗練(politeness)」:「商業」実践に伴う「卑しさ」や「腐敗」を払拭する手段として「洗練」や「作法」が重視された。「洗練」は研鑽を積むことによって達成される指導者層にとって必要不可欠な徳となり、行為の「道徳性」がこの時期に重要な意味合いを持つようになった。(3)「劇場性(theatricality)」:市場経済の進展がもたらした流動性や交換可能性を前提とする価値体系は、流動的かつ「劇場的な」人格概念の形成に大きな影響を及ぼしている。それはまた、当時の演劇作品に見られる変幻自在の人物造形および絶えず自らの価値基盤の虚構性に目を向けさせる自己言及的な演劇空間とも密接に関係していると思われる。このようなアウグストゥス帝時代の「商業」と「文学」の広範な関わり合いについて、さらに考察を進めていく予定である。

I also talked about the close relationship between the acting space and the hands. In the era of Emperor Wu,"commerce" and "literature" are the most important factors in the development of Chinese literature.
